Teams - 7 Essentials of Leading a Team in Turbulent Times

As a manager or leader, there will be times when you are going between strengths and weaknesses while getting better at your job. It is likely that there will be occasions when you confront significant obstacles. The current economic climate is an instance of a problematic scenario. What are the most critical aspects of managing teams through difficult times?

Essential 1: Be honest

If you’re in the midst of or are about to face turbulent times, it is vital, to be honest with others. Mainly, it is essential to communicate the issue to them as well as what you’re doing to resolve it and what the consequences could be. It can be difficult for leaders and managers to manage and, while some may not be happy with the circumstances, they’ll be more impressed when you’re sincere.

Essential 2: Communicate

Communication is vital in challenging times. It is essential to not focus only on selling and telling but equally on listening. People are looking to be heard. They might have great ideas that will aid you in your journey or solve some of your issues. Prioritize communication.

Essential 3: Empathy

Being a leader and managing others requires the ability to be tough, but this doesn’t mean that you have to be utterly devoid of compassion. Empathy isn’t about having an easy-going person, but it’s the ability to walk in the shoes of others and see things from their point of view.

Essential 4: Take the responsibility

If you’re an executive or manager, people are looking at you to be accountable, take things to the next level, push forward ideas and bring things to fruition. A lack of leadership is not something that is usually well accepted, and people are likely to find it less during turbulent times. Accept the responsibility of the current situation, and help make things happen.

Essential 5: Focus on the outcome

In a time of uncertainty and turmoil, it can be easy to forget what you’re in the business to achieve and the outcomes the company wants to produce. A skilled manager and leader will concentrate on finding solutions to the most significant issues and ensure that the business remains productive every day. Focus on the results.

The most significant 6: Concentrate on the long-term

In times of uncertainty and difficulty, it’s easy to concentrate all your attention on immediate decisions. Although you can’t avoid making tough decisions like cutting costs, you must ensure that the decisions you take are best for the interests of your company over the long run. Training is often among the first areas to be cut; however, it could be that employees require more education to make required adjustments.

Essential 7: Look after yourself

Everyone expects you to manage and lead and help other people. But you are a human being and have to look after yourself to perform at your best. This could mean regular exercises or having a guide or coach with whom you can discuss issues.

The bottom line Management and leading in turbulent times is a huge problem. What do you have to do to perform the best you can be?
