Team building leaders should start with communication team building. Team leaders often assume that the failures of other team members are to blame when things go wrong.
But it could be. This could simply be a lack of communication team building. These are three ways to ensure communication channels work appropriately with your team.
1. People communicate better when they speak their language.
This may seem obvious, but it’s often overlooked. Sometimes team leaders will try to fit square-hole people in round holes and then wonder why it didn’t work.
It is easy to give your team members what they want and need. For example, someone who is more comfortable in a controlled environment may struggle to perform in an open and challenging setting.
Communication is key to team building. Leaders must first get to know their members, understand what they need, and then give it to them.
2. An assumption is one of the causes of the problems.
A team leader should not make assumptions. An assumption is best described as a guess. While it might be correct, it could also be incorrect. This is not the foundation for effective communication team building.
Only one way to get to know your team is by observation. Although you can look at their profiles until your eyes are red, it is not enough to learn anything about them.
You can observe how members of the team interact naturally by following them. It is possible to integrate their natural communication style into the team-building exercise. This will prevent them from being forced to communicate effectively.
3. Effective communication can only be achieved by understanding and observing.
It would be a mistake to leave it at that. Although it is possible that all the information collected is sufficient, it could not be. Asking is the best way to be specific.
Do not assume your observations are correct. You probably are right, but it is worth asking your team members. You will tell them that you have seen how they interact and that method X seems to be the best for them. Ask them if this is true.
At this point, many things take place. Because he/she consults with team members, the leader of the team gains respect. They are not left to their own devices. They also gain the trust of their members, which makes them more likely to comply with the requests. They are also more likely to be committed and engaged in the exercise.
